Champion's uproarious farewell

( 07. 01. 2017 )
Three Slovenians in the final run - Ana Drev strikes from sixth place - Best GS for Ilka Štuhec ever - Tina Maze bid farewell in front of 15 thousand fans

The best Slovenian athlete, one of the best alpine skiers of all times, a three-time-overall- winner in the World Cup said goodbye as it fits a champion. The full snow stadium - some 15 thousand fans gathered in the sun and cold to see the first run - was cheering:” Tina, Tina, Tina, Tina!”, as she started in her usual way, to win.

Tina Maze raced down the upper part through the first ten gates, stopped to hug Andrea Massi, greet the spectators and then continued down the slope, racing towards the finish area just like a few years ago when winning the Pohorje races and many other all over the world. Right before the finish she stopped only to take off her skis, stepped over the finish line with skies in her hand and threw her ski poles to fans screaming her name loudly. This way she symbolically ended her long and successful career, in which she became the winner in the overall standings in the World Cup with a record breaking number of points won in one season. She immediately took off her bib 34, which she according to her opinion got unjustly, and beneath it showed that famous bra from Cortina d'Ampezzo from 2012: "Not your business!"

However, the 53rd Golden Fox Trophy is not just Tina Maze’s farewell. The American Mikaela Shiffrin took the lead in the first run of GS, but also the Slovenians raced excellently. Just a bit delayed after the American is Ana Drev, placed 6th, from where she will be able to strike for better final positions and what is more, also Ilka Štuhec thanked all her home fans with her best GS skiing ever. In the final run also Tina Robnik will perform.

Tina Maze:” This was very emotional, but also great. I am overwhelmed, also because of the fact, that this is the place where I started and also achieved a lot. Thanks to all the fans, thanks to all the people, who cheered for me, supported me and helped me. These were 18 extraordinary years!”
